Keyworths Early was bred by Prof Ernest Salmon at Wye College, Kent. It was selected in 1943 as one of the few varieties found to show moderate resistance to wilt disease. It is a vigorous variety producing large, open, ragged cones. As its name suggests, it is early maturing. However it was not particularly popular with brewers and production ceased in 1962. It has a pungent flavour of grapefruit and lemon, more in keeping with modern tastes hence its recent revival.
